It is a tough world out there on all levels. We all have experienced the difficulties of the modern professional world as we all strive to achieve excellence, working smarter, longer and harder seems the only way forward. It is after all commonly said nowadays that “if you want to succeed, double the hours you work”..but then again, a new study performed in South Korea shows it may also mean losing your hair.
The scientists performing the test, from Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea, used a sample of 13,391 men aged between 20 and 59 from 2013 to 2017. The findings were consistent across all participants, even after taking into account lifestyle variables and marital status.
Indeed the results were significant and showed that long working hours are directly related to the development of alopecia, or hair loss. Incidences of baldness in the normal group were 2% by the end of the study. In the ‘long’ group it was 3% and almost 4% in the ‘longer’ category. The added stress is assumed to cause the hair to enter what is called a “catagen” phase hence triggering damage to follicles which in turn causes hair loss.
This does not really come as a surprise to experts in the industry – as well as sufferers – as many previous studies have indicated that emotional stress can drive our bodies to ‘attack’ hair follicles via the immune system. It is also widely believed that a stressful and overworked lifestyle can also affect the ‘resting’ phase of hair growth. This means that your hair could be damaged irreparably and stop growing completely.
“The results of this study demonstrate that long working hours is significantly associated with the increased development of alopecia in male workers. Limitation of working hours in order to prevent alopecia development may be more necessary from younger workers, such as those in the 20s and 30s, at which [time] hair loss symptoms start to appear.” explained lead study author Kyung-Hun Son.
